The Chiado is the most elegant, traditional and glamorous city district of Lisbon. It sits right between Bairro Alto and Baixa. In this part of town well-known Portuguese writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries used to gather. Fernando Pessoa the poet was born there and his statue is on Rua Garrett. The 25 of August, in 1988, a fire started in a nearby street and reached Rua Garrett. It affected not only shops and offices, but also important historical buildings. The Chiado recovered thanks to the renovation project which lasted a decade. It was coordinated by the famous architect Alvaro Siza. La Rua Garrett is the center of Chiado, Lisbon intellectual pole in the S XX. It limits above the Largo do Chiado and the Rua do Carmo at the bottom, around the Opera (Teatro Nacional Sao Carlos) the Sao Luiz and Trindade Theatres, the most famous libraries (Bertrand, Literary Guild ...) the centenary Café Brasileira, and the Archaeological Museum is located Convento do Carmo. The area is also known for the most famous international local shops (Hermes, Cartier, Benetton ....) and for the best cafes as well, bars and restaurants in town.
